Appointment to the Professional Standards Council of NSW – Expressions of Interest

The Hon Matthew Kean MP, seeks expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons for appointment as a member of the Professional Standards Council of NSW.

The Professional Standards Councils are independent statutory bodies with powers to assess and approve applications from associations for Professional Standards Schemes that limit the civil liability of members.

The Councils play a key role in improving professional standards and protecting consumers by:

  • Monitoring how well associations and their members meet the standards demanded by their Professional Standards Schemes
  • Providing Ministers with advice regarding the professional standards of members of professional associations, including the operation of Professional Standards Schemes
  • Encouraging and assisting the self-regulation of professional associations
  • Overseeing the strategy for consumer protection data collection, analysis, and reporting for the use of professional associations.
  • Determining future projects to raise the governance capacity of professional associations to improve professional standards

Expressions of interest are sought from suitable candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Extensive governance or Board experience, preferably in a profession or professional association at the C-Suite or director level.  Ideally this experience would be ten years’ plus in one or more of the following areas:  actuarial, accounting, legal services relating to negligence litigation, risk management/compliance, professional standard and integrity systems, professional occupational insurance, senior government experience.
  • Their interest in new and emerging professions, and balancing regulatory models for professional occupational regulation. 
  • Financial and budgetary oversight experience.

The time commitment of Councils members is 1 – 3 days per month, on average, which includes reading technical and policy papers for meetings, and the interpretation of each is relied on to make complex decisions which may impact on Government’s reputation.
