Managing compliance – tips, tools and techniques

This Forum provided an opportunity for over 30 delegates from across the national system to hear from experts and peer associations on the topic of ‘Managing compliance – tips, tools and techniques’.
Overview session: Effective compliance management systems and the Australian Standard, Jai Desai - Governance Institute of Australia
The Governance Institute of Australia commenced with an overview session providing advice on strengthening compliance management systems, based on the Australian Standard (ISO 37301:2021) and legislative obligations.
Workshop 1: Managing scheme compliance with professional standards legislation
This workshop provided an overview of scheme and association compliance obligations, with practical guidance for associations on meeting the requirements of professional standards legislation.
Brian Nolan, Manager Professional Standards Scheme and Risk at the Law Society of South Australia, presented a case study highlighting their approach to developing and maintaining a compliance framework.
Workshop 2: Managing member compliance with professional standards obligations
This workshop provided an overview of scheme participant compliance obligations, with a focus on association member requirements and principles-based approaches to compliance planning.
Jessica Jameson, Director Licensing and Registry at the Law Society of New South Wales, presented a case study showcasing their approach to implementing and monitoring compliance plans.
These discussions provided valuable insights and tools for strengthening compliance management and will help inform the Professional Standards Councils’ new guidance on compliance, to be released next year.
